Below you will find some theories of treatment and some applications when in counseling. This is by no means an exhaustive list, just a place to get you started. Theories of Treatment: Many forms of family therapy are based on family systems theory. Family systems approach generally fall under the categories of structural, strategic, or intergenerational: Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, designed by Sue Johnson, an intervention-based therapy on the scientific study of adult love and bonding processes in couples, is designed to address distress in the intimate relationships of adults. Strategies from emotionally focused therapy can also be used in family therapy to help family members connect and improve emotional attachment. Couples seeking counseling to improve their relationships may find this method a beneficial approach. It can help people better understand both their own emotional responses and those of significant people in their lives. Structural family therapy, designed by Salvador Minuchin (Links to an external site), looks at family relationships, behaviors, and patterns as exhibited within the therapy session to evaluate the family structure. Employing activities such as role-play in session, therapists also examine subsystems within the family structure, such as parental or sibling subsystems. Strategic family therapy, developed by Jay Haley (Links to an external site.), Milton Erickson (Links to an external site.), and Cloe Madanes (Links to an external site.), among others, examines family processes and functions, such as communication or problem-solving patterns, by evaluating family behavior outside the therapy session. Therapeutic techniques may include reframing or redefining a problem scenario or using paradoxical interventions (for example, suggesting the family take action seemingly in opposition to their therapeutic goals) to create the desired change. Strategic family therapists believe change can occur rapidly without intensive analysis of the source of the problem. Intergenerational family therapy acknowledges generational influences on family and individual behavior. Identifying multigenerational behavioral patterns, such as anxiety management, can help people see how their current problems may be rooted in previous generations. Murray Bowen designed this approach to family therapy, using it to treat individuals, couples, and families. Bowen employed techniques such as normalizing a family’s challenges by discussing similar scenarios in other families, describing the reactions of individual family members instead of acting them out and encouraging family members to respond with “I” statements rather than accusatory statements. Narrative Therapy seeks to be a respectful, non-blaming approach to counseling and community work, which centers people as the experts in their own lives. It views problems as separate from people and assumes people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments, and abilities that will assist them in reducing the influence of problems in their lives. Your paper should include: • Factual research, not simply a subjective opinion, uses peer-reviewed journal articles to make your points. Do not use personal or made-up examples; this will not be considered academic material. • This is not a personal experience paper. Do not use actual people or stories to demonstrate a point. Do not makeup examples to explain a point. How does the therapy you have chosen take a couple through the process of making the changes they need or require?
