PART 1 Post:

Thyroid Disease

The thyroid produces thyroid hormone that regulates several body activities such as metabolism rate and heartbeat rate.  Thyroid diseases cause the thyroid gland to release more or less thyroid hormone, leading to either hyper or hypo production of thyroid hormone (van Dijk et al., 2015). Thyroid diseases are more prevalent in women more than men. In women thyroid diseases, menstrual cycle issues, difficulty in conceiving, and pregnancy-related problems may affect the mother and the baby. Women with thyroid diseases can experience symptoms similar to those of menopause. Hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and thyroiditis are some of the common thyroid diseases.  This paper will provide a description of hyperthyroidism and its common symptoms in women.

Hyperthyroidism is a condition that causes the thyroid to become overactive thyroid causing it to produce more thyroid hormone that required for body function (North American Menopause Society, 2020). High thyroid hormone levels in the blood result in accelerated body functions such as increased heartbeat and metabolism rate.  Hyperthyroidism has been significantly linked to Grave’s disease, occurring due to problems with the immune system.  Symptoms of hyperthyroidism may go unnoticed in the early onset of the disease, but with time patients may begin to experience some of the symptoms including unintended weight loss, increased appetite, irregular or high palpitation, insomnia, anxiety, moody, increased respiration, tremors in hands and fingers, hot flushes, muscle weakness, changes in bowel movement with prevalent diarrhoea, abnormal light menstrual period, and redness, irritation and bulging of the eyes (Walsh, 2016).

Hyperthyroidism is diagnosed through a blood test; TSH is not detectable in a healthy person, but in patients with hyperthyroidism, free T4 and/or free T3 (Walsh, 2016). The treatment course for hyperthyroidism depends on the presenting symptoms and the underlying cause of the condition. Pharmacological therapy includes antithyroid medicines like Carbimazole that block the thyroid from producing new thyroid hormone and Beta-blockers that inhibit the level of thyroid hormones in the blood and help relieve some of the symptoms (North American Menopause Society, 2020). Another treatment option is Radioiodine, a procedure that uses radioactive iodine to shrink the thyroid until it gradually destroys it; it causes permanent hypothyroidism. A surgical procedure to remove part of the thyroid is also a possible treatment of hyperthyroidism (Walsh, 2016).
