In this course, you are making political arguments for or against the policy. Your focus is not to prove your clinical point (assuming that you can do this), it is to be able to understand and participate in the public policy discussion with participants most of whom are not clinical professionals. Who are the stakeholders? Who may be a barrier or a supporter? Are there areas of possible compromise? One important hint: public policy almost always hinges on who gets or controls money. So follow the money in the argument. Example: Insurance companies do not want to be told what they have to pay for, consumers want their expensive premiums to cover comprehensive and quality care, administrators want to deliver care and contain cost, providers want to get paid well for the care they are delivering.
